My Musical Theater Voyage of Discovery; The Letter D
DO RE MI. I have come to understand that I just don’t like comedy numbers. Bert Lahr, Phil Silvers, etc. Don’t like ‘em. Cut, cut, cut. Nancy Walker has a good number in here. Maybe two. And there IS Make Someone Happy, which I love. Nancy Dussault has a good number in here, somewhere. I just don’t like this show. Eeek. Oooops.. Deleted most of it. Shame on me.
DESTRY RIDES AGAIN. LOVED it. Loved every note. Andy Griffith has a really good singing voice! And I’ve always love Dolores Gray.
DANCE A LITTLE CLOSER. What a lovely but oddly recorded cd! The vocals echo! But the songs are lovely and the singers are gifted, so I didn’t delete very much of it, if any at all. Len Cariou could really sing.
[For the Record: THE DROWSEY CHAPERONE is sheer perfection so how can I delete any of it from my Ipod? Besides, I have seen and loved every Sutton Foster performance on Broadway and I have deep loyalty to her. DREAMGIRLS – well, golly -- it's Dreamgirls! I mean, it's Jennifer Holiday, Sheryl Lee Ralph and my favourite actress, Loretta Devine, in one of the all time great shows and scores. I ain't deletin' one track from THAT. DREAM was a colossal flop on Broadway but I have an audio bootleg and I put a track or two in because (don’t tell anyone) I liked it -- even Leslie Ann Warren, who was vilified by all. A DAY IN HOLLYWOOD A NIGHT IN THE UKRAINE is one of my very favourites, but DAS BARBECU didn’t really speak to me, though all of Sally Mayes, Carolee Carmello and Julie Johnson’s tracks are in my Ipod. DAMN YANKEES is in my Ipod because I have to have the Ray Walston and Gwen Verdon tracks from the OBC and because the revival cast recording is so comprehensive (even though I am driven to distraction by Bebe Neuwirth’s lateral lisp.) Victor Garber is always amazing and, boy, could that Jarrod Emmick sing.]
