My Musical Theater Voyage of Discovery; The Letter J

JENNIE is a show that I had listened to a couple of years ago and thought, absent mindedly, that it was nice. Then I never listened to it again, even though every time I saw it was in my Ipod I thought “Jennie! Sweet!” Well I listened to it again and it really is a wonderful score and Mary Martin is marvelous in it. I don’t know all about the show – I have the feeling it may have been a flop but I guess I like flops because I have been noticing how many of these records that I like are listed under ‘FLOPS’ in the book BROADWAY MUSICALS THE 101 BEST SHOWS OF ALL TIME. I guess I’m gonna have to take a hit for it; but SOMEBODY has to lavish some love on these shows. Jennie, I love.

JAQUES BREL IS ALIVE AND WELL AND LIVING IN PARIS. Can you believe I never got to know this show? And I have a friend who is DEVOTED to it. So I thought “this will be fun to get to know” – after all, if Andrew loves it; and Brady loved this revival cast and production (which is why I put it in my Ipod because I trust Brady). I know that, somewhere, I have a cd of the original cast from the 70s – I will have to investigate it, too, because I ABSOLUTELY LOVED this cd!! This cast sings so flawlessly and these songs are so wonderful. There is a rating system in the itunes library where you can give the songs 1 to 5 stars. Almost every track on this cd got 5 stars – the ones that didn’t got 4. Nothing below 4. I am so excited, glad and happy to have put this musical into realm of knowledge.

[For the Record: JOHN AND JEN is represented in my Ipod by a few numbers. We saw the play and loved it but it isn’t a cd that I listen to from start to finish. JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR, on the other hand, is in my Ipod from start to finish. It is one of the shows that I don’t just love – I live it. Not an ALW fan, I devour JCSS. Similarly, I devour JERSEY BOYS. It is one of my favourite shows I have seen, one of my favourite shows to listen to. JEKYL AND HYDE actually IS in my Ipod. A deeply flawed show, I remember sitting in the theater and watching it and clapping and cheering because of the work of the three leads. So I have their numbers in my Ipod and I play them, with love.]
