My Musical Theater Voyage of Discovery; The Letter S
SUNSET. I think Tammy Grimes is so interesting; and I love the one song from PLATINUM that I know (Nothing But), so I put this one in my Ipod to listen to it and get to know it. Some of it is really groovy and I sure do like the unique timber of Grimes’ voice. Most of it, though, is impossible and had to go.
STOP THE WORLD I WANT TO GET OFF. I love Anthony Newley and have since I was a childhood; I never, though, found my way to this show. I’m so glad I finally did. I loved every minute of this cd
SONGS FOR A NEW WORLD. I actually just have one cut from this cd. I bought Jessica Molaskey’s recording of Stars and the Moon off of itunes. One day I plan to get the entire cd. I just don’t have the money.
SOMETHNG FOR THE BOYS I love Cole Porter and I love Ethel Merman, so I imported this cd that I didn’t know and I played it through and, while I liked a lot of it, some of the group numbers didn’t interest me. I sure do love listening to that lady sing, though. All of her tracks stayed in the Ipod.
SO LONG 174TH STREET. I didn’t get it. A lot of it, I didn’t get. I didn’t like a lot of the lyrics. I didn’t like some of the tunes. There were, though, a couple of catchy numbers and some sweet performances, not the least of which was The Butler’s Song (which I had heard in the past because Steve Lovett loved it so.) In the end, some 4 or 5 songs stayed in my Ipod.
SILK STOCKINGS. I know the film version but never listened to the cast album. Gretchen Wyler is the end! I really like this cd! I deleted the big Russian men’s chorus numbers, though. Too much.
SARATOGA. I had no idea what this was about when I imported it into my Ipod. I still don’t. I do like some of the songs, though, and boy howdy can Carol Lawrence and Howard Keel sing! All those group vocals had to go, though. I would like to read more about the show.
SAIL AWAY. Who wrote this??!! I LOOOVE it! A big Stritchie fan, I’m ashamed I haven’t investigated it sooner. Love every track, love every performance.
[ For the record: SWEET SMELL OF SUCCESS is a score that’s in my Ipod because I love listening to Brian d’arcy James and Jack Noseworthy sing. SWEET CHARITY’s OBC is in the Ipod from start to finish, which is as it should be. SUNSET BOULEVARD has certain select tracks by each of the Normas who has been recorded – but no full recording is in my Ipod because it’s a score that doesn’t thrill me. SUGAR BABIES has been cut down to Ann Miller and Mickey Rooney and one or two of the group numbers, while SUBWAYS ARE FOR SLEEPING is complete; STATE FAIR is all the Andrea McArdle, Donna McKechnie, Scott Wise and Ben Wright cuts. STARTING HERE STARTING NOW is complete – what an amazing collection of songs. SPRING AWAKENING is complete. I have the revival cast of SOUTH PACIFIC and the Reba/Stokes concert version. I have the OBC and Revival recordings of THE SOUND OF MUSIC – the revival cd has been trimmed; I also have the Petula Clark cast of SOUND OF MUSIC; the ‘climb ev’ry mountain’ is unforgettable. I kept SNOOPY and SMOKEY JOE’S CAFÉ intact, as well as SKYSCRAPER and SIDESHOW. SHOW BOAT and SHE LOVES ME. I deleted a lot of SEUSSICAL. I liked it when I saw it but I won’t listen to most of it. SEESAW and SECRET GARDEN stayed in from start to finish. SCROOGE, starring Anthony Newley, too. Selections remain from the UK recording of SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER and THE SCARLET PIMPERNEL ]
