My Musical Theater Voyage of Discovery; The Letter T part two
TELL ME ON A SUNDAY. It should be said: I am not a fan of Andrew Lloyd Webber. I respect him. I admire what he has done for musical theater. However, I find many of his scores uninteresting and repetitive (not only within themselves but he has reused certain melodic schemes over and over in various scores). I don’t want to get into some big dissertation about ALW – I happen to love JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR and EVITA and I have an odd adoration of BY JEEVES. His other cast albums, though, I play tracks, only; never the whole show. I don’t like this show; I just don’t. That’s it. I do, though, love one or two of the songs. I also wanted to investigate Denise Van Outen, who I saw on a reality tv show and liked. I imported her cast album and played it through and deleted the songs I didn’t like (most of the score), leaving the title song, Haven in the Sky, Unexpected Song and Capped Teeth and Cesar Salad. I also have Sarah Brightman’s recording of the title song and one or two cuts from this musical done by Rebecca Storm. I have Bernadettte Peters’ version of Capped Teeth and Cesar Salad and Come Back With That Same Look In Your Eyes. Each of these women bring something special to various performances from this score that I, generally, don’t like… There are, though, sweet songs .. Tell Me On a Sunday is one of the loveliest songs ever.
[ For the record: the last entry in the T’s is the Helen Gallagher musical TALLULAH. I’ve had the record for years and played it many times. The only song I really like is the title track, so I’ve had it in my Ipod for years. It’s not a very good score but she is wonderful and I do like that song, in spite of itself.]
