My Musical Theater Voyage of Discovery; The Letter O

ONE TOUCH OF VENUS. I am coming to realize that I may not be a big Kurt Weill fan – which seems odd, since I love Lady in the Dark and so many of his songs (It Never Was You is a particular favourite of mine, as is Speak Low). I’ve known the story of One Touch of Venus for years and seen the film. When it came time to listen to this cd, though, only about three of the Mary Martin tracks kept my interest. So in the name of not taking up a lot of space in my Ipod with songs I won’t listen to, I deleted most of this cast album. Shame. I really wanted to like it.

ONCE ON THIS ISLAND. I never saw this play on Broadway. I saw a high school production directed by my friend Stephen Kaplan and I remember enjoying it. I never listened to this cast album though. So I put in my headphones and lay in the sun last weekend, listening to it and guess what? LOVE it. Every song, every note, every thing. It is DELISH.

ON A CLEAR DAY YOU CAN SEE FOREVER. A lifelong fan of Barbra Streisand, my experience of this musical was always the movie and the movie soundtrack. I knew that they had cut a lot of songs because I had read about it in various books. I had seen footage of Barbara Harris and John Cullum on old tv specials friends made copies of for me. I love Miss Harris and Mr Cullum and I began listening to this cd earlier this year and fell in love with it. I regret, now, just placing all my faith in the extremely expurgated movie soundtrack because it deprived me of years of listening pleasure with the OBC. It is heavenly.

For the Record: ONCE UPON A MATTRESS OBC is in my Ipod but mostly just Carol Burnett with some of the cuts by the supporting characters. Not Jane White. I don’t like Agrivaine’s numbers and I don’t like her. I do have two cuts from the appalling revival that starred Sarah Jessica Parker…I actually like her version of Happily Ever After and David Hibbard’s Very Soft Shoes. ON YOUR TOES is one of my favourites. I saw the tour of the revival, so that is the cast album I chose for my Ipod. I’m also a longtime fan of Christine Andreas. So I have most of the cd in my Ipod – I can’t listen to Dina Merrill sing, no matter how much I love her, so I cut her number—also the Princess Zenobia ballet music – I won’t listen to it. ON THE TWENTIETH CENTURY is probably one of my top 5 favourites. I have the OBC in my Ipod and an audio bootleg of Judy Kaye and John Cullum. I could listen to it all the time – and do. ON THE TOWN is a musical I like but don’t love to listen to. I love watching it on film, on stage, but I don’t love listening to it. I’ve kept some of the more melodic tunes like Lucky to Be Me, Some Other Time and Ya Got Me – and, of course, I kept New York New York, Come Up to My Place and I Can Cook Too. I did delete the rest of it though. OLIVER, I love and always have. I hve the OBC and the Palladium recording with Jonathan Pryce. Love both of them. Georgia Brown freakin rocks. My first OKLAHOMA cast album was the revival cast with the previously mentioned Christine Andreas. No disrespect to Mr Drake, Miss Roberts or Miss Holm.. it’s just that it’s Laurence Guittard, Martin Vidnovic, Christine Ebersole, Harry Groener, Bruce Adler and Miss Andreas. This is the one I like.

I so agree with you on the OBC of On A Clear Day. I loved listening to it when it first came out and was VERY disappointed in the movie version. And I am a major Barbra fan. Barbara Harris is better! A great actress who seems to have backed away from performing.
