My Musical Theater Voyage of Discovery; The Letter k
[For the Record: KWAMINA has been trimmed back to (mostly) only Sally Ann Howes’ numbers. I love her and have since I was five and true love lasts forever; KISS ME KATE is one of my favourite shows and I put in the OBC with Mr Drake and Miss Pat Morrison, as well as the revival cast with Brian Stokes Mitchell and Marin Mazzie. Both recordings are wonderful but the revival recording has SO much stuff on it that I had to make some cuts – never Stokes or Marin, though. THE KING AND I may be my favourite Rodgers and Hammerstein show and I have some of each recording in my Ipod. The OBC – some Gertrude Lawrence; the revival cast with Constance Towers has the best recording of the Overture and my favourite ‘I Have Dreamed’ (Martin Vidnovic –sigh) and Constance Towers’ dialogue on the ‘Shall We Dance’ cut is really special; Donna Murphy’s revival cast recording is stellar and, natch, she is the living end; and then there was this wonderful surprise when I got the West End version of that production, starring Elaine Paige and Jason Scott Lee – it was so good that I kept (almost) all of that cd, too. I know it’s overkill but when it comes to The King and I, I am greedy.
