My Musical Theater Voyage of Discovery; The Letter N
NO STRINGS. Freakin gorgeous. I could listen to Richard Kiley and Diahann Carroll all day. Richard Rodgers really hit one out of the park with this score.
NIGHT OF THE HUNTER. So. When I heard there was a musical version of Night of the Hunter, I thought it was one of the worst ideas I had ever heard. But then, I also thought that when I heard there was a new musical based on Ragtime and that’s one of my favourites now. So I imported this cd and planned on disliking it because, let’s face it, these days there are lots of studio recordings of concept albums for musicals that haven’t been produced and most of those cds are awful (see: the Zorro musical). I was wrong. I really enjoy this cd, the songs, the progression of the story within the score, the wonderful vocal performances. I found myself not wanting to delete anything from this cd. That’s not nothing; especially when it is me who is doing the deleting. Sally Mayes. Heavenly.
NEW GIRL IN TOWN. This is good stuff, guys. I had a wonderful time listening to it. Natch, I am devoted to Gwen Verdon, so I went in prejudiced. I liked it a lot, choosing only to delete a couple of the group numbers and songs by secondary characters that didn’t grab me enough to warrant a second listen. Most of this score, though, remains intact in my Ipod.
NINE is my favourite musical so I have the OBC, the revival cast album, the Australian cast album and the UK concert version – soon I will have the movie soundtrack, too. I am nothing, if not obsessive. I hate NAKED BOYS SINGING sooooooooooooooooo much. I saw it in its’ original incarnation in LA and I saw it in New York because I had a friend in it. I hate it and what it stands for. I hate it. BUT. There are some cute songs in it and they are in my Ipod: Robert Mitchum,. Perky Little Porn Star and the title song (which has a catchy melody) but that is it.
