My Musical Theater Voyage of Discovery; The Letter F

FIORELLO! Didn’t know this show. Still don’t know the story. Gonna need to read up on that. However, there are some catchy tunes and fun performances, so I left most of it in my Ipod so I can get to know it better.

FINIAN’S RAINBOW. Now, it isn’t really fair to write about this show as one I don’t know because I grew up on the movie. But I never listened to the OBC until this last week and I love it. I love the performances and the entire recording. I’m so glad I investigated it!

FANNY. My friends, Ken and Frank, declared this musical to be one of the 101 Best shows of all time. I don’t get it. I deleted almost all of it, except for the lovely overture, the title song and a song about being kind to your parents. It’s all SOOOO legit-sung. I can’t listen to that. It would make me crazy. Sorry, Ken. Sorry, Frank. Sorry, Florence Henderson.

FADE OUT FADE IN. This is a fun little show with Carol Burnett and Jack Cassidy…. So how does one delete Carol Burnett and Jack Cassidy? One doesn’t. There were a couple of numbers by others in the cast that bored me. So. Bye, bye.

[For the Record: FUNNY GIRL IN CONCERT is in my Ipod but just the numbers from the audio bootleg I got – and they are wonderful except for the off pitch Cornet Player on Cornet Man. The OBC is in my Barbra Streisand section – one of my favourites. I loved the play FOSSE but, truthfully, I don’t listen to all the numbers so I trimmed it down for space in the machine. FORTY SECOND STREET is in my Ipod twice because I love the original recording with Tammy Grimes and Jerry Orbach and I love Christine Ebersole, period; I did, though, cut some of the revival recording because I don’t like the way it sounds – like the singers are deep throating the mike (and themusicians, too, especially the Casio-playing portion of the keyboards section). I would, though, listen to Christine Ebersole sing anything, so…. FORBIDDEN HOLLYWOOD and FORBIDDEN BROADWAY are represented in my Ipod by something like 4 songs. I don’t really like the whole parody thing but the Sharon Stone, Audrey Hepburn and Liza Minnelli sections of Hollywood are funny, as are the Aida and Gypsy sections of Broadway – but that’s it. FLOWER DRUM SONG (revival cast) is so, so beautiful! Such gorgeous songs, lovely orchestrations and fabulous performances! Jose Llana is one of our personal favorurites, as is Jodi Long -- and it cannot be denied that Lea Salonga can really sing. I simply love this cd!! THE FANTASTICKS: sigh. Every note. Sigh. FALSETTOS – love it, love it, love it. Every bit of it. ]
